Purpose: See HW #10 for an explanation of the purpose and objectives for all of your Reading Journals.

Assignment Requirements:

Overall, your Reading Journal assignment should be at least 2 paragraphs long and total at least 450 words. Include the word count at the end of your assignment, before your Work Cited information for your edition of The Namesake. Requirements are included below.

  • At least one paragraph focused on Gogol & Moushumi’s relationship in response to the following:

To what extent do Gogol and Moushumi’s shared Bengali roots, mother tongue, and “hybrid” identities both unite them and divide them? In other words, what primary role(s) does their shared cultural background play in their evolving relationship? Explain your thoughts, and choose at least one article or TEDTalk (BB > Readings) with which you can establish similarities and contrasts based on one of these shared themes in red.*Include at least one direct quotation from these final chapters to help guide your discussion and support your response.

  • At least one paragraph focused on Ch. 12 in response to the following:

Reflect on both Ashima’s and Gogol’s evolving journeys toward a sense of belonging, as well as Gogol’s individual journey toward self-understanding, culminating in this final chapter. Then, consider whether you agree or disagree with the following argumentative assertion made by a former student:

Overall, Lahiri’s novel The Namesake illustrate that sense of home and belonging is created more through one’s experiences and environment than through one’s cultural roots.

Use a TSIS template from Ch. 4 or 5 to directly respond to this student’s assertion and express your agreement and/or disagreement, along with a logical reason why. See the “Paper3-SampleIntroClaims” handout from Friday’s class for a selection of template options. (Standard examples: I agree/disagree that ____ because ____; While I concede that ____, I cannot accept that ____ ). Then, after your TSIS template response, develop a paragraph following PED structure in which you include at least one direct quotation from Ch. 12 to help guide your discussion and illustrate your viewpoint regarding the conclusion of the book. You are welcome to use Gogol and/or Ashima as your primary evidence to help support your response (focusing on just one character or on both characters). Additionally, choose at least one article or TEDTalk (BB > Readings) with which you can establish similarities and contrasts based on one of these shared themes in red, and explain points of convergence/divergence with Gogol’s and/or Ashima’s experiences.

  • Additional clarifications to receive full credit on this assignment:

-          Respond to each of the questions above

-          Include at least one direct quotation in each paragraph to guide your discussion & support your response. Other references to the text can be paraphrased in your own words.

-          Include parenthetical citations for all paraphrased references & direct quotations. Example: (Lahiri 19)

-          For each paragraph, establish a thematic connection with at least one of our previously discussed articles/TEDTalks based on one of the themes in red included in the sets of questions for each paragraph. Establish key points of convergence and/or divergence between the characters in The Namesake and the ideas/experiences discussed in the article/TEDTalk.

1 Gogol and Moushumi's relationship
A similar trait that Gogol and Moushumi have in common, which ties them together in the beginning, is that they are both hybrids. Given that they are both hybrids, it is clear that they share both American and Bengali origins. Additionally, they are all attempting to identify with American society. Gogol determines his name doesn't sound sufficiently American and keeps it a secret from his buddies. He even believes that the name would disappear if he did not have the people in his life who nicknamed him Gogol. It "does not offer him a sense of victory, though" (Lahiri, 241). Even though his marriage with Moushumi was prearranged, they grew close because Gogol believed it was about time he discovered and accepted his Indian heritage. On the other hand, what divides them is that they both have Bengali ancestry. Moushumi believes she is married to someone who is ethnically similar to her but intellectually different. Moushumi feels that she needs to create new relationships that are not just based on her original culture. As a result, she cheats on Gogol with Dimitri, who shares her values. The two would be able to sit down and talk about literature, something she could not have achieved with Gogol. She even feels "strangely at peace and calm" for cheating on her husband (Lahiri, 224). Thus, as a result of their similar cultural origins, they became divided. According to Hirsch, individuals are likely to be attracted to people with the same cultural background (240). One may feel comfortable and understood when they feel that they have something in common. That is why Gogol feels h...
