Purpose: See HW #10 for an explanation of the purpose and objectives for all of your Reading Journals.

Assignment Requirements:

Overall, your Reading Journal assignment should be at least 2 paragraphs long and total at least 450 words. Include the word count at the end of your assignment, before your Work Cited information for your edition of The Namesake. Requirements are included below.

  • At least one paragraph focused on Ch. 6 in response to the following:

In Chapter 6, we learn that Ashima has become quite independent in her life on Pemberton Road while Ashoke is away from home, teaching in Cleveland. Meanwhile, Gogol has moved in with his girlfriend, Maxine, and her parents in New York. Throughout the chapter, Gogol finds himself comparing Maxine and her family (and the world they inhabit) to his own family (and the world they inhabit): two different worlds (and cultures) colliding. Describe this collision of places and cultures and both Gogol’s and Ashima’s evolving sense of belonging. How is Ashima evolving in her acceptance vs. resistance to assimilation into American culture? And what leads Gogol to feel that “his immersion in Maxine’s family is a betrayal of his own” (Lahiri 151)? Is Maxine’s family representative of a “typical American family,” why or why not? Additionally, choose at least one article or TEDTalk (BB > Readings) with which you can establish similarities and contrasts based on one of these shared themes in red, and explain points of convergence/divergence with Gogol’s and/or Ashima’s experiences. *Include at least one direct quotation from Chapter 6 to help guide your discussion and support your response.

  • At least one paragraph focused on Ch. 7 in response to the following:

Chapter 7 serves as the climax (turning point) of the novel – Why? What happens? And how does this life-changing event lead to major shifts and changes within the Ganguli family, both the family as a whole, and also the main characters individually (particularly Gogol)? Discuss what you believe are the 2 or 3 primary ways that Gogol’s sense of belonging and self-identity evolve/change as a result of this turning point moment in his life. Additionally, choose at least one article or TEDTalk (BB > Readings) with which you can establish similarities and contrasts based on one of these shared themes in red, and explain points of convergence/divergence with the family’s experiences. *Include at least one direct quotation from Chapter 7 to help guide your discussion and support your response.

  • Additional clarifications to receive full credit on this assignment:

-          Respond to each of the questions above

-          Include at least one direct quotation from each chapter (in each paragraph) that you examine closely to explain how/why it illustrates your point of view. Other references to the text can be paraphrased in your own words.

-          Include parenthetical citations for all paraphrased references & direct quotations. Example: (Lahiri 19)

-          For each chapter/paragraph, establish a thematic connection with at least one of our previously discussed articles/TEDTalks based on one of the themes in red included in the sets of questions for each paragraph. Establish key points of convergence and/or divergence between the characters in The Namesake and the ideas/experiences discussed in the article/TEDTalk.

Chapter Six
We can see a collision of places and cultures through Gogol and Maxine. In the chapter, the friendship between Gogol and Maxine becomes one of the novel's central story aspects. The closest comparison between Maxine's upbringing and Gogol's is a perfect example. Maxine's parents are not immigrants, unlike Gogol's parents, who came to America as children. They are well-read New Yorkers who are up to date on the latest political scandals, art shows, and literary issues. They drink copious amounts of wine and talk around the dining table late into the night.
To analyze the aspect of sense and belonging, we look at the element of change. The change enables us to see how the characters accept and resist the changing scenario of their lives. Even though Ashima occasionally yearns for life in Calcutta, she acknowledges that she and her family have built a new life and home in the United States. In a way, her needs for love, fulfilment, and company never alter. However, the environment and setting in which these aspirations are satisfied differ. Therefore, she shifts from resistance to acceptance. Gogol is also comfortable and accepts the changes. Our lives are full of change, and it is usually crucial that we learn to accept them, as Stagl narrates in her Ted talk (Talks). The Ganguli family shares a lot of similarities with the typical American family. Most American families are immigrants struggling to incorporate their original cultures and those of America.
An important quote in the chapter is by Gogol, where the book narrates, "Here at Maxine's side, in this cloistered wilderness, he is free." Here, Gogol desires to shed himself on the expectations and traditions of his parents. He admires that Maxine can do whatever they want without consequences.
Chapter Seven
The Ganguli family experienced a significant period of change in Chapter 7. Of course, the most shocking event is Ashoke's sudden demise,...
