Part A
1. In his seminal book On Right Pleasure and Good Health, the humanist Platina (Bartolomeo Sacchi) talks about the ethics and the esthetics of food. Analyze the basic ideas of the book, its importance, and its novelty. Please add your personal comments.
Bartolomeo Sacchi (Platina) summarizes in his book regarding how a person ate as critical as whatever that person ate. The main idea in his book is that what people eat matters a lot to their health and well-being. The "pleasure" mentioned in his publication's title denotes the pleasure derived from stringent devotion to a friendly food dietary plan and not from greediness. This specific pleasure is relatively different from what people presently imagine enjoyable. In the humanist Platina's era, pleasure critically referred to excellent health, and it originates from the moderation in food and all elements that human nature explores, as Platina covers in the introductory part. The book is appreciated for its novelty or originality as it was the first printed cookbook. After its publication, there were frequent reprints in the following century, whereby it was translated into different languages such as Italian, German, French, etc. The book was widely accepted across various audiences, and it was initially purposed to notify about cooks' choices in houses for the elites. Moreover, translations into the local languages made it easier to reach the middle and lower classes, who expected to learn about the period's cuisine. Platina's book is increasingly important because it was the first-ever cookbook to clarify identifiably contemporary gastronomy principles stressing every concept from the relevance of clean tableware to fitting good-looking periodic decorations. For example, he recommended that "a table set in cool and open places" would enhance the summer season. Positioning flowers on the table in the dining room was a spring-season rite. He also argued that a dining room during winter must be scented with perfumes and should have ripe grapes, apples, and pears hanging on the ceiling during autumn.
2. The text Galateo by Giovanni Della Casa became very famous as it was published and was translated into many languages. Talk about the content of the book and the reasons for its success. Please add your personal comments.
Giovanni Della Casa's Renaissance courtesy reading concentrates on particular subjects like table manners, dress code, and conversation etiquette. Most importantly, it is a guide to whatever an individual must do and what they must avoid in a typical social setting. Readers can ackn...
