What view of the self does the stories we tell advance?
In philosophy, “self” is termed as closely related to the aspect of personal identity. In a quest to understand the concept, an analogy of self and center of gravity has been made by Strawson (2004). Self and gravity are abstract forms as they have no mass, color, and physical properties. In the documentary film, “Stories We Tell” by Sarah Polley, the issue of self is highlighted as the film revolves around her family and the ordeal she went through to discover her “self”. In the film, Sarah discovers that she was born out of an affair between her mother and a film director. The story affected her as it started as a rumor, then it turned into ridicule before she took DNA tests to confirm her birth father (Polley, 2012). The analysis of the film highlights key aspects between self and fictional characters in films....
