Experience in Reading the Play "Death of a Salesman"

Book Review Instructions:

During this course you have learned how to research the theater that is available to watch in your area. Another aspect of theater appreciation, one that you will explore in this assignment, is READING plays. The act of READING a play is different than WATCHING a play. In fact, the act of reading a play is even different than reading a novel. Your Play Reading Assignment is to read a play of your choosing and write about your experience reading the play.
Please include the following in your paper:
-What is the title of the play that you read?
-Who wrote the play?
-Write about how you decided on this play?
-Where did you find a copy of this play to read?
-What surprises, if any, did you experience while reading the play?
-Did you enjoy reading the play? Why?
-Did you experience any difficulties or frustrations as you read the play (difficult to understand, boring, etc.)?
-How was reading this play different than reading a novel?
-How was the experience of reading this play different from the experience of watching the plays that you have watched this semester?
This paper is to be Two and Half pages, double spaced, and written in twelve-point font.
Use strong structure (the body of the paper should have a clear beginning, middle, and end. So should each paragraph).
Be succinct.  The assignment is three pages for a reason; to limit the space in which you have to express yourself.  Therefore, if you are attempting strong analysis it becomes very important to pick your words well and build to a point.  Each sentence should build and drive the thought of the overall analysis, because there is no space to waste.
Spell check and be strict about grammar.
Finally -- and this should go without saying-- don't waste precious space writing about the cost of the tickets, commute to see the show, the lobby of the theatre, what you ate for dinner, etc.  Stick to critique and analysis of the show and how it effected you.
Strong structure and grammar will earn between a B and a B+ (80-89) depending upon how well the sentences build in each paragraph, etc.  Any writing that earns an A (90 or higher) is of strong academic quality and additional points are based on how well the writing flows, builds, and drives.

Playwriting assignment
“Death of a Salesman” is a play by Arthur Miller that is seemingly educative on how people can trigger their frustrations and, when they become unbearable, opt for suicide. Willy Loman is one of the characters in the play and emerges as the protagonist and antagonist. He is a man who paints a false picture of himself to his family and friends, and he ends up losing his identity, hence being unable to accept change. Willy bases his success on being assertive and attractive. As a result, he is disappointed when he fails to achieve these traits. However, despite being incapable of appreciating his achievements, he angers and loses the trust of Linda, his wife, and Biff, his son, due to his affair (Miller, 1949). Diverse themes unveil themselves in the play, one of them being the American dream which is the central premise. It describes how Loman hungrily wanted to live the American dream, considering he was a salesman and would use likeability to his advantage.
However, when he failed to achieve the dream due to mediocrity and obsession with money and fame, he became a failure, suicidal, and eventually tarnished his family’s lives. According to Miller (1949), betrayal is another theme in the play. Willy betrays his wife when the family comes to learn of his affair. Biff, his son, was hurt and changed his perspective toward his dad by perceiving him as a liar and untrustworthy. This act of unfaithfulness was the start of Willy’s misunderstanding with Biff and Linda. It is ironic how the protagonist is sixty years old and has not achieved his goals when according to society, by sixty, he should be stress-free and enjoying success, however small or big.
I chose to review this play since it is a piece that vividly depicts what happens in society and mirrors how people’s mistakes can catch up with them and cause harm to their lives and loved ones. The book is popular and written by an author who loves to write stories inspired by personal experiences and reality. Moreover, such stories educate on most of the lessons one should learn about life’s dynamics and the importance of appreciating every individual in society. The author’s inspiration was also a motivating factor in choosing the play due...
