Chapter 18: The Messianic Words and Actions of Jesus
The task of building a psychological profile of Jesus revolves entirely around his words and deeds. According to chapter 18, His reputation as a miracle worker has continued to trigger questions regarding his understanding of his identity and purpose. However, evaluating His words and actions helps to debunk this mystery. It reveals a great deal about how He perceived himself regarding his natural and scriptural heritage. (564). To grasp a better comprehension, however, it would be prudent to examine Jesus' words and actions in the context of 1st-century Judaism.
Authority of Jesus
How Jesus exercised authority in words and deeds is relevant to how he understood his identity and purpose. According to the author, for instance, Jesus exercised the preeminence of announcing and instituting the kingdom of God. (564). In the context of the history of Israel, the message is significant. This is because Jesus proclaimed Himself as the agent of restoration, healing, and wholeness to the world. Moreover, His declaration resonates with the scriptures in the Old Testament, especially the book of Isaiah, whose principal themes are the coming of the kingdom and the renewal of the creation.
Further, Jesus exercised other forms of authority to illustrate that he understood his divine identity. For instance, He exercised dominion over the law and the Sabbath. Even though Jesus acknowledged the law, he expressed great authority to expand and interpret it in a way that accommodated the new age of salvation. (566). It was, therefore, common to hear him repeatedly saying, “You have heard that it was said…but I say unto you”. (566). This underscores that he recognized the law but had the authority to amend it. Regarding the controversy surrounding his view of the Sabbath, Jesus declared that the institution of the law was to enrich people’s lives and not to suppress them. He also intimated that the Sabbath was made for man, not vice versa. 
In addition, Jesus exercised the authority to forgive sins, which generated heightened hostility from the Pharisees and scribes. They argued that Jesus was arbitrarily assuming the prerogative of God. However, because Jesus understood His divine identity and authority, protestations from the Pharisees and other detractors did not stop Him from exercising the authority. In doing so, He demonstrated the presence and power of the kingdom of God through His words and deeds. (568).
The Aims of Jesus
