Preserving visual representations has significantly altered my perspective on the colonists’ experiences in Aotearoa, New Zealand. The artwork has provided me with a historical perspective, facilitating my comprehension of the impact of colonialism on this aesthetically pleasing location and the indigenous Māori community previously inhabited there (MacDonald et al., 2021). During my educational tenure, I learned about the advent of European settlers, the Treaty of Waitangi, and other land and resource allocation conflicts. Before embarking on this project of curating images, my knowledge of New Zealand’s colonial history was limited to that information. However, seeing the visual archives has made my perspective more nuanced. The visual representations that I have observed provide a multifaceted narrative. Specific artistic works showcase the pristine and untouched natural splendor of New Zealand. The verdant terrains likely appeared like a romantic haven for the initial European explorers. Conversely, vivid depictions of Māori individuals experiencing the loss of their hereditary lands and cultural practices exist (Graham & Masters‐Awatere, 2020). The photographs that I took during the historic walk tour provided me with visual evidence of the violence and inequities throughout the colonial enterprise. These artifacts serve as a reminder that colonialism was not one event but rather a protracted process that significantly impacted the lives of indigenous populations.
To initiate reconciling with our colonial history, it is imperative to acknowledge and confront its unsettling realities. It is essential to comprehend that the social, economic, and political aspects of New Zealand continue to be influenced by its colonial history. A firm dedication to addressing them should support the recognition of these disadvantages and inequities suffered by the Māori community (Shepherd, 2023). One such approach involves actively interacting and collaborating with Māori communities. Respecting their traditional history, attentively considering their viewpoints, and actively including them in their land and community decision-making processes are of utmost significance. This approach aligns with the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi, which guarantees Māori participation, safeguarding, and collaboration. In the contemporary day, revisiting the Treaty and reaffirming its provisions could potentially constitute a pivotal measure in pursuing peace (Terruhn, 2019). The educational reconciliation approach would provide a more comprehensive and equitable representation of New Zealand’s historical narrative while concurrently fostering cultural awareness and promoting the values of respect among younger generations.
From an individual perspective, I aim to contribute to fostering a more equitable and just society by proactively promoting comprehension and dialogue. I am interested in utilizing the photographs I have captured to curate exhibits and deliver talks that elucidate the profound impact of colonization on...
