Islamic art and architecture has been influenced by history, existing tradition and different cultures. Evolution of Islamic architecture reflected unity and art themes in buildings tend to be decorative in nature. Through use of geometry Islamic architecture focused on creating complex patterns, but rotation, symmetry and repetition is common in Islamic architecture. Geometric patterns in Islamic architecture are typically complex showing the integration of patterns and optical effects. Geometry became an important aspect of Islamic architecture from the 8th century due to advancement in science and technology (Abdullahi & Embi).

Light is an integral part of Islamic architecture as it captures the divinity of God. Light influences creation of patterns because it determines the interior and shape of Islamic buildings.
