Abstract
The Al-Qaeda has been one of the most prominent terror groups in the world. Over the years, the terror group has carried out attacks in various parts of the world something that has left behind untold suffering and destruction in their wake. This paper utilizes various research articles in a bid to establish the effect of Al-Qaeda in the world. The research paper will use a 2004 article by BBC titled Al-Qaeda’s Origins and Links to discuss the origin of the terror group. This will be supported by another article by PBS titled Inside the Terror Network to explain how the influence of the Al-Qaeda has spread over the years to what it is today. The research will then examine an article by Rohan Gunaratna titled Al-Qaeda’s Ideology to discuss about the group's ideology and how it is likely to affect the world. The paper will also utilize research by Seymour Hersh in an article titled Intelligence Failure to examine how the failure of intelligence groups led to the growth of the terror group. The article will also use another article by Richard Aldrich titled US-European Intelligence Co-operation on Counter-Terrorism: Low Politics and Compulsion to examine how cross-border intelligence has changed over the years. This will also be supported by another article by Calvert Jones titled Intelligence Reform: The Logic of Information Sharing to explain how intelligence sharing has changed over the years and how this can help to stop the influence of Al-Qaeda.
The Impact of Al-Qaeda
Al-Qaeda which means ‘the base’ was created in 1989 by disgruntled forces from the Afghan army who under the leadership of Osama Bin Laden went on a recruitment mission for new jihads. The movement grew out of a common goal of fighting against Soviet Communism and in its early days the organization received funding from the American and the Saudi governments. In the 1990’s, Al-Qaeda had spread its wings to Sudan but in 1996 all its operations were relocated to Afghanistan. During this period, Osama Bin Laden created a close relationship with the Taliban army which became very instrumental in his offensive against the United States. The effect of the Al-Qaeda was minimal until September 11, 2001 when they carried out a terrorist attack against the United States.
According to Rohan Gunaratna, contrary to other terror groups, Al-Qaeda presents a unique threat to the United States, its friends, and to international security in general. The major reason for this is because Al-Qaeda and Taliban have a wide network that is well funded across the world. While Al-Qaeda carried out a major offensive against the United States in 2001, the terror group has been carrying out an attack after every three months and even though the terror group is among one of the most hunted in history, the Jihad unleashed by the group is likely to outlive itself and the current crop of Islamists. The major reason for this is because the real strength of the terror group lies not in its international infrastructure and membership but rather in its overarching and highly attractive ideology.
