1. Describe three ways your nursing care skills expanded during the clinical rotation.
The rotation expanded my skills and knowledge of infants in nutrition. I spent most of the time in the NICU preparing bottles or syringes for the infants. The infants varied in their feeding times and routes of the feed. I learn how to comfort an infant when they were crying, how to keep an infant from aspirating during bottle feeding, and how to set up gavage feedings when an infant does not feed by bottle.
2. Name three things you might do differently if you encounter a similar situation again.
I would be more confident in my abilities. I was a little scared at first to hold and care for infants. I came to realize later that they were not as fragile as I had thought. I would like to know more about caring for infants by interacting more with my preceptor and breastfeeding mothers. I learned a lot in a session I attended between a breastfeeding mother and specialized lactation nurse. Also, I would conduct more research on infant nutrition and related procedures before my attending infants in the NICU.
