MGT 450 COVID-19 TERM PAPER REVISION

April 21, 2020

In response to the COVID-19 Crisis, the MGT 450 Term Paper parameters have been revised.

Choose one company from the three listed:

  • Arch Coal

  • Facebook

  • Harley Davidson

  1. For your company of choice, identify their problem areas.  For example:

  • Arch Coal – The external environment is having an impact on the fossil fuel industry.  Fossil fuel sourcing is finite.  Climate change, and the world response, is impacting the industry.  Arch Coal has faced numerous lawsuits and fines as a result of their mining practices.

  • Facebook – Both external and internal issues prevail here.  Facebook has had its share of controversies in recent years.  Most notably, back in 2018 the social media company experienced public backlash and legal consequences over the Cambridge Analytica gained access to private data from millions of Facebook accounts. In this election year, Facebook is embroiled in yet another controversy, but this time it's not about your data: It's about foreign interference in American elections, and partisan politics, and freedom of speech. Internally, their crisis management has been poor.  And, some feel, unethical.

  • Harley Davidson – The iconic motorcycle company is in financial trouble, largely because of dropping sales.  It has failed to make motorcycles that today's current bike buyer wants. It has more recently tried producing some smaller bikes, like its Street 500 and 750s, but sales in that segment fell 30% year over year.  The brand is also very expensive and they have had many recalls.   When you pay that kind of money for something, you expect high quality!

In your research, you will likely find additional issues plaguing these companies.  Your discussion of the problems will likely be a page or two of narrative.

  1. For your chosen company, create an Organizational Development plan to address their business problem(s). Assume you have the time and culture to embrace change. Assume your process has been participative. Remember, OD is evolutionary.

  • Chapter 7 discusses the Basic Strategies to Change.  Table 7.1 lists several interventions

  • Chapter 6 discusses resistance to change, which translates to potential challenges to your implementation of the change.

You might want to use a table format to plot out your OD plan.

EXAMPLE:

  1. For your chosen company, create an Organizational Transformation plan in response to the COVID-19 crisis. How can these companies continue to provide their goods and services with the stay at home orders and physical distancing directives?  Remember OT is revolutionary and directed from the top down because you are in a reactive state forced on your company by the external environment.

If you used the chart method for OD, you can use it again for OT.
