Art is an important aspect in human life. Art dates back to decades of years back with artists creating artwork for the purpose of self-expression. In the first article by Jonathan Lethem, he discusses about how artists put property rights to their work of art to prevent others from plagiarizing that work. For him it does not make sense to have property rights on works of art since even those arts have borrowed ideas from other people. He highlights how borrowing ideas from other artists leads to creativity and development of new forms of arts he says “Invention, it must be humbly admitted, does not consist in creating out of void but out of chaos. Any artist knows these truths, no matter how deeply he or she submerges that knowing,” (Lethem, 61) Lethem (64) uses a quote from Thomas Jefferson when he says, “He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me.” This quote means that the artist does not lose anything by sharing ideas with other artists. Most people do not develop ideas from nowhere but by borrowing ideas from their surrounding and other artists.
The article Polity of Its Own Called Art? By Richard Schechner is an article that looks at how artists can participate civic activities of their countries. The article questions how artist’s use art to portray the kind of community that they live in. Schechner states that, “In common usage, to be a citizen means to enact one’s affiliation with a place and its people, their aspirations, common purposes, rights, duties, history, and future. Good citizens are willing to lay down their life in defense of the common purpose; bad citizens avoid performing the duties of one who belongs,” (34). ...
