Elie Wiesel’s “Night”
Elie Wiesel in his 1960 book, Night talks about his experience during the German Nazi regime. Ideally, in a sad revelation Wiesel recalls of how the holocaust before the end of the second world war turned people into monsters. He rebukes the saddening acts of inhumanity where people were killed, maimed or had their lives destroyed. The author does not use characters in the novel, instead he uses his personal experiences. In essence when an author uses his experiences to showcase a narrative, instead of making-up characters, he calls for a deeper emotional appeal. In other words, readers immerse themselves in a realistic experience seeing the cases or history from the author’s perspective. Further, Wiesel uses his character to enhance credibility and reliability as an individual worthy to discuss the subject matter in his book, since he experienced the entire ordeal.
Elie and his family end up in concentration camps after Germans occupied Hungary and disrupted their peaceful town. The Nazis, discriminated against the Jews and it was not long after their occupation of Hungary that they bundled the Jews in animal vehicles and transported them to camps to work as slaves. Throughout the story, Wiesel narrates on the many struggles he goes through. First, he is a Jew in Nazi Germany. That alone was enough to make his life and that of his family one of misery (Wiesel, 1960). As a young Jew, and wit his family’s staunch belief in Jewish culture, he learns about religion and the goodness of humanity, but as things get worse, he realizes that all his teachings were in vain. He and his family are moved to concentration camps and they are separated from each other. His mother and sisters are taken to a different section of the camps and he is left to be with his father.
