Shifts in Meaning, Use of the Concept of Diaspora and Implications for Application in the Context of Multiculturalism.
The term diaspora has a historical origin during the dating back during the age of the Jews. Diaspora was perceived differently at different times in history, but it predominantly meant dispersion (BRUBAKER 120). In the modern world, the idea of diaspora has been advanced due to several developing reasons that lead to migration and dispersal. There are six types of diasporas, namely, Victim, Labor, imperial, Trade, cultural, and globalized mixed forms. Traditionally, the term diaspora mostly referred to the people who were forcefully dispersed by unfavorable conditions or by their communities. Today, this idea is not necessarily right since some people migrate to advance their businesses or even due to marriage. Furthermore, the traditional Jewish concept of diaspora comes across as a punishment for disobeying the commandments of God. The idea of dispersion explains the religious differences among several denominations in the past and considers these religious communities as diasporas.
However, in modern times, the term does not necessarily refer to the migration of people; it could mean segregation of communities. Most communities around the world identify with their cultural roots, and hence those who cannot trace their identity could be referred to as a diaspora. The victims of segregation, such as the gay community, can also be considered as diaspora, and this is proof that the idea could exist in people’s imagination. In modern times, the term diaspora could also mean acceptance, which is contrary to the traditional concept of side-lining. The diaspora today are perceived to be people of the wealthy class who can afford to travel from one country to another. There has been a shift in the meaning and use of the concept of diaspora.
Multiculturalism can be viewed as a result of immigration and assimilation of people from their original homes to different homes. The idea of diaspora concerning Multiculturalism exists due to several reasons. The most common illustration of Multiculturalism is African-American immigrants. During the slave trade, most Africans were forced to migrate as workers in the west. The intermarriages between Africans and Americans brought about the rise of Multiculturalism.
