Review of The Post film
At the time of the production of the film, the Washington Post is a family-owned but publicly traded business. Eugene Meyer, Katherine Graham’s father, founded the organization. When Meyer was appointed as the head of World Bank, he signed the business to Phil Graham, Katherine Graham’s husband, who ran it until he died. Katherine Graham then inherits the company, and is the lead publisher in the film, The Post (Spielberg 1). At this time, the financial structure of the firm is that it is profit-driven and privately funded organization. The lead financer used to be Eugene Meyer. However, the company faces certain financial pressures including, as Arthur Parson states, the fact that bankers of most of its international investors threaten to cease their support if Katherine publishes the papers on the study of Secretary Robert McNamara. This pressure puts The Post in a position where the investors expect it to deliver profits, to ensure that it focuses on the number of audiences and not the concerns of the citizens and place profit before providing quality journalism. There was a lot at stake if The Post published the paper. The arguments against the practice stated that the whole business and the legacy of the paper was at risk. The position also states that in the context that Katherine approves the publishing of the paper, she would lose the company; all her investors would pull out their support for the organization, and the shares would drop by $3 million.
