John Storey’s Cultural theory and popular culture: An introduction, presents different meanings of popular culture. The first definition is that popular culture t is populous, well liked by people and widespread. There are different meanings of popular culture when considering conceptual categories such as folk culture, culture of masses, the dominant culture and culture of the working class. This definition focuses on pop culture that people can identify with and there are no negative connotations associated with this definition. This definition focuses on popularity and one to gauge this is by determining what music that people listen to, the artists, and what is most commercially successful. For instance, considering the online streaming numbers, sales and the music that is popular across different demographic groups can provide clues on what is favored and well liked by many people.
The second definition highlights the residual of what is not high culture and pop culture is excluded as it has inferior class and status (Storey 6). This definition categorizes high culture above other forms of culture including popular culture that are placed in a different category. Since this explanation focuses on the high cultured people, one of the most applicable uses of the explanation is on high cultured art and what is popular among the high cultured people. However, there is no single agreeable definition of “high class” even as this is associated with the upper class people. The high cultured are a minority in most societies, but still they influence tastes and preferences.
