Impressionism and Post-Impressionism
Impressionism and Post-Impressionism are two distinct artistic eras that greatly influenced the field of art all over the world. Impressionism artistic movement is estimated to have begun in the 1800s in France and lasted for an entire century, up to 1900 (Moffett 293). Some of the renowned artists who begun this movement included Berthe Morisot, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Fredrick Bazille, Camille Pissarro, Auguste Renoir, and Mary Cassatt, among others. These artists played a crucial role in revolutionizing the field of art and entirely changed the perception of painting. Contrary, Post-Impressionism is an artistic era characterized by a group of artists opposed to Impressionism methods of artistry (Dorra 153). There were prominent artists who pioneered Post-Impressionism techniques, and they include Paul Cezanne, Georges Seurat, Vincent Van Gogh, and Henri De Toulouse-Lautrec. Artists living in both Impressionism and Post-Impressionism eras resorted to applying artistic techniques that were absent in earlier movements. As opposed to preceding art techniques, Impressionists and Post-Impressionists produced unique works that were inspired by their personal experiences instead of generalization (Dorra 153; Moffett 293). They used unique perspectives, emotions, vibrant colors, movements, and well-defined brush-strokes to improve lighting on their work in a bid to make their subjects lively compared to the works of artists in the earlier generations. The art techniques during these movements sought to break the monotonous of stiff portraits and religious themes that curtailed the ability of artists to be creative and apply distinct elegances. Practices such as painting outside were introduced during this era. At this time, artists resorted to employing various methods with the capacity to increase their innovation, a perfect example being painting outside (Dorra 153; Moffett 293). These techniques enabled the artists to create paintings with attractive features that were never achieved in the earlier artistic movements. Although artists during these times applied different methods that rendered their works exceptional, they massively relied on broken brushstrokes. However, the previous art movements preferred concealing the application of brushstrokes by employing seamless and soft designs. Nevertheless, efforts to conceal broken brushstrokes stalled achievement of the distinctiveness of an individual artwork, which was evident in Impressionism and Post-Impressionism eras (Dorra 153; Moffett 293). The current paper offers a detailed analysis of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism art movements and discusses comprehensively two of the most popular artists, Claude Monet (Impressionism) and Van Gogh (Post-Impressionism).
