Taco Bell Online Crisis
In June 2013, a photo of a Taco Bell employee licking a stack of taco shells was posted by the employee on his own on social media page. The photo soon went viral and customers were worried, angered, and disgusted (Exhibit 1). By the time Taco Bell executives were aware of the photo, it had been reposted so many times that there was no way to take the photo off the internet. Taco Bell quickly (on the following day) issued a press statement on its own website (Exhibit 2). Later that day, they issued an updated version of the press statement to further explain the situation and their responses (Exhibit 3). However, Taco Bell remained relatively quiet on social media. While Taco Bell did respond to a number of individual customers’ posts on Facebook (Exhibit 4), their press statements were never posted on their Facebook or Twitter accounts. Moreover, customers and Facebook fans soon found out that Taco Bell had disabled the comments on its Facebook page.
