Term Paper Overview (Total two parts)

    In the Social Sciences it is necessary to make connections between what is happening in the world and what you are learning in your course. You will need to tie in the following key course concepts:

  1. Civil Liberties & Rights
  2. The role of Supreme Court decisions in policymaking
  3. Civil Rights Legislation

The first part of your final paper will be an outline, which will help you do the research for your final paper. The second part will be a term paper that based on the analysis of your findings and must include key course concepts from the Greenberg-Page textbook (Greenberg, Edward and Benjamin Page. The Struggle for Democracy. New York: Pearson Publisher, 2014. ).

Part 1 – Outline (must be finished within the early 5 days)

Creating academic papers often begin with an outline. For this assignment, you will use the research you have collected for your Final Assignment and create an outline of your information. An outline generally follows this type of format:

Many word processing programs have outline formatting tools to help you. This Purdue OWL Sample Outlines PDF gives examples of outline formats as well.

 

Part 2 – Term Paper Directions (complete on/before deadline)

  1. Choose your topic + Find 2-3 external sources for your final project
  2. Create an outline, making certain to note where you got your resources. The best kind of outline to use for a paper is the TOPIC SENTENCE OUTLINE (an example is on the Purdue OWL page link listed above).

 You have been asked to create a 3-5 double-page report on an underserved population, detailing the case law and legislation that has been passed related to the community/group you have chosen. You will need to have at least 3-5 external resources to complete your paper.

This report should include the following:

  1. Definition of your community
  2. Description of at least 2 Supreme Court cases and/or laws that have affected your community (either positively or negatively)
  3. Your assessment of the current status of your community (think about whether anything else may be needed to ensure equality for this group)
  4. Chicago Style Citations properly formatted

OUTLINE
INTRODUCTION
Definition: The LGBT community is a group of people whose sexual orientation falls in four major categories that include Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender
The lesbian and gay categories are most notable groups because most of them engage in same-sex marriages
Same sex couples have always been denied most of their civil liberties because of their sexual orientation
Thesis Statement: Recent Supreme Court rulings have helped to narrow the gap between same sex couples and heterosexual couples

Topic Sentence: The June 26, 2015 Supreme Court ruling legalizing the same sex marriage in all the 50 states was a very big win for the LGBT community

The LBT community will continue to face some future challenges despite the recent victories in the Supreme Court
There is a need for both the state and federal governments to enforce all non-discriminatory laws in order to save the LGBT community
