Historical event. Who is an “American?” History Term Paper

Term Paper Instructions:

Please always remember the Rule of Three Thesis Statement. I'll upload the Prompt which is the question fo
r the 2 page essay and other instructions to help you writ a good evidenced and concise essay.
Thank you.

  • In this exercise you will use your reflective question sets and all the skills you have learned in the previous exercises to write a full length, rule of three, historical essay on the prompt below.

As a reminder, an analytical essay contains an introduction setting up the context (with a clear rule of three thesis statement as the last sentence), three paragraphs of the body (in the same format as the one paragraph assignment) - one for each key point in the thesis statement, and a conclusion.

Hint 1: Think broadly about what it means to be American first, then think on groups pressing their case for inclusion, while considering issues of ethics and civics.  You must include social/cultural/socio-economic analysis in this essay.  You may include political (but not required).  What primary documents have you read that address these issues?  Don't forget the key individuals and events to use as evidence. Successful essays will consider a broad range of evidence in support of arguments.

Hint 2: You may wish to concept map or outline key issues first and then pull out your three strongest arguments to develop more fully in the essay.

PROMPT

From 1865-present, the conception of who is an "American" deserving of the full rights of citizenship has changed over time. In this essay, we want you to review the answers you gave to the reflective questions and think back over what you have learned in this course.  Also consider the historical context, causality, and change over time when describing thinking about changes in the definition of who is, and who is not, an American.

In your essay analyze how the definition of what it means to be "American" and the rights of "Americans" changed between 1865 and today.

Who is an “American?”
Name:
Institution:
Date:
Industrialization and technological innovation promoted the development of massive corporations and transport networks in America. These raised the demand for labor, which united thousands of immigrants and farmers. People migrated to America in search of opportunities, to be free and so that they could get another chance to reach their dreams. Most of the immigrants hoped that after getting to the United States, they could provide labor in the already established factories, get money and return to their counties. However, most of these people settled in the United States and their population have increased ever since. This paper explains what it means to be American, and evaluates how changes in social and socio-economic developments have shaped the image of being an American.
Some individuals believe that one is an American if he or she was born in the United States. Additionally, there are those who believe that being American is being superior to other races. To the contrary, being American to me means being equal to everyone regardless of race and gender and being American means having the same rights and freedoms. Previously, people were discriminated depending on their place of origin, color, and gender. For example, initially, the African Americans were significantly oppressed in the south through slavery and by being denied their basic rights. Notably, lynching was a common practice and victims were murdered for even crimes they did not commit; it estimated that white mobs murdered about five thousand African Americans. However, with time, changes have been implemented to recognize the immigrants and black people as equal Americans.[The American Yawp, 2013. "18. Life in Industrial America: The New South and the Problem of Race." Accessed March...
