Among the fundamental needs that human beings are always trying to satisfy is finding True Happiness or its illusion. According to Boethius, some of the genuine goods that humanity pursues to seek pleasure and happiness are wealth, power, fame, pleasure, and friendship (Peterson, 2021). Happiness is defined philosophically to mean something more than just a momentary state; it is a way of being that is uninterrupted and will go on for a long time, and is secure. Many false conceptions of true happiness are being modeled through different mediums in this 21st Century. This feeding of false conceptions of happiness happens through our popular culture via advertising and mainly social media. This paper will critically compare Boethius's views on the desire for social status and approval of the current social media culture and the points made on the podcast.
The grass always seems greener on the other side. This perception of other people's lives and happiness always leads to subconsciously or consciously comparing a person's life to what seems ideal. Social Media gives this illusion of perfection in people's lives with no context that negatively feeds a false conception of happiness. The main concern with false conceptions through social media -for example, Instagram- is that the people posting may have gotten themselves mixed up with these misleading conceptions and whose intentions are also to see other people mixed up.
