CLASS REQUIREMENT # 2--A 1500 WORD MINIMUM TERM PAPER: A term paper of no less than 1500 words (you can have as many over that amount as you wish) will be written on a Topic which you should select from a list of Language Development Hypotheses.  This list is provided at the very end of this survival message, and is also available in the Class Requirements Section of the online Course.  The Term Paper is to present a discussion based on a minimum of three articles, books or chapters in a book (excluding the class Text, of course), that describe, or support or refute the hypothesis you have selected from the list.  A minimum of three citations (you can have as many above that number as you wish) with references in APA format will be included at the end of the paper. An example of APA format is also provided in the Class Requirements Section of the online Class. Also, at the end of the paper you should include a short Appendix, which will answer three questions:  1. What were the databases, if any, that you used to find each article or book; 2. What was the search strategy you used (i.e., the search words you used) in each database to find the articles; and 3.  Was each article that you cited an example of Primary or Secondary research? Child development is affected and influenced by multiple factors. The kind of exposure that a child gets when growing up largely determines how they turn out later in life. The initial stages when a child is growing are extremely vital. It becomes necessary to orient the child in a particular way so that learning becomes easy. It is said that the brain of a child can be compared to a clean slate. Their behavior, grasp and understanding of things will be determined by how they are oriented. Language development is one of the key elements of child development. There are various ways in which a child can be assisted in mastering a language. One such way is reading books for them at a very young age. While this may seem absurd and perhaps too ambitious, it forms a solid background for language development among children. This paper puts into focus the importance of reading books to a small child and the benefits this has to development of language.
Background Information
The step by step process through which a child begins to gain comprehension of communication is known early childhood language development. Development of language among children takes places in various stages, from the very basic to the point where a child can fully understand and communicate to people around them (Swim, 2012). The stages of language development in children include cooing which is the first stage, followed by imitation. Imitation is where a child repeats what he or she hears albeit not always exact. The third stage is cognition where a child has begun gaining understanding and recognition of words. This is then followed by balling and finally construction of short sensible sentences.
Benefits of early Reading
Research has proven that kids who were exposed to reading when they at an early age have a better grasp of language as compared to those that learnt the language later. (Dickinson et al, 2012) argues that when parents and guardians encourage early reading in their children, it is seen a preparation for success in the later life. The benefits of introducing children to books at an early age are immense and multifaceted. When a child is encouraged to read books, they become confident and gains courage to speak. They have good mastery of the language at an early age giving them the gusto to speak without the fear of mispronunciation. A child develops high esteem and believes in themselves better when they can easily express themselves.
Early introduction to reading and especially when it is done by the parent has also been seen to strengthen the bond between the parent and the child. As children strive to be more like their parents, they likely to repeat what is read to them by their parents. It is during the early stages of development that it becomes easy for parent to establish and identify any weaknesses that a child may have. When a parent reads out aloud for the child and the child attempts to repeat, challenges such as difficult speech can be identified at an early stage.
The process of Language Development
Language development is a process as opposed to a one off activity. The process is gradual as children build up from little to more. Every day, they acquire new words which they build up to what they already know (Swim, 2012). Mastery of new words is what eventually ensures that children can eloquently express themselves and this helps boost their confidence. It begins with very simple and basic words. However, as the habit of reading becomes deeply entrenched in them, they begin to embrace even more complex words.
