With the increased population and economic development across the globe has necessitated the need to make adjustments towards the global requirement. Today, containerization industry has greatly expanded offering excellent services (Rijsenbrij, 2008). The expansion of the containerization industry including vessels, high tech terminals computerized information system and inland transportation are some of the notable areas (Rijsenbrij, 2008). The shipping lines have overcome the global requirement by applying the economies of scale to improve container vessels. Terminal and ports have expanded their facilities to improve productivity while inland transportation responded by the barge and rail transportation (Rijsenbrij, 2008).
Well-Organized systems have not met customer needs of delivering high quality for low costs. Terminal operators, port official, and government operated inland transportation firms are challenged to not only expand, but also to improve the handling process, including, infrastructure and provide improved performance at a lower cost (Wiegmans, Nijkamp & Rietveld, 2008).
To achieve quality require spending more money. Hence firms need to weigh the value density to understand all process involved in container in transit and inventory using a logistic system (Wiegmans, Nijkamp & Rietveld, 2008). In terms of business, it means stocking low-value items compared to high-value items. To deliver high-quality services require several costs, including inspection and prevention costs (Wiegmans, Nijkamp & Rietveld, 2008).
Measuring total container handling cost includes total transportation costs. Other cost includes terminal handling costs that cover the value of freight, size of shipment, weight, density, additional terminal service to justify the costs (Wiegmans, Nijkamp & Rietveld, 2008).
Firms can use SERQUAL model is a framework to analyze the quality service at the terminal. The model measured the differences of customer expectation and observation involved customer expectations more reliable his observation then it lacks quality. Quality is achieved if the equal observation expectations (Wiegmans, Nijkamp & Rietveld, 2008).
