1 What effect did the Thirty Years war have for the population and religious divisions in Germany?
It devastated the economy and decimated its population; commercial growth suffered because the treaty of Westphalia gave control of mouth Rhône river to Dutch, left Germany fragmented which delayed unification.
2 Explain why England settled for the Glorious Revolution of 1688.
Glorious Revolution was one of culture (Steimetz,2017). It was out of fear for the Catholic dictatorship and influence that England settled for the Glorious Revolution of 1688. The revolution would end up replacing reigning King James II.
3 Discuss how the policies of Cardinals Richelieu and Mazarin and the Gallicanism of King Louis XIV affected the Church in seventeenth-century France.
Cardinal Richelieu policy of supporting Protestant canton against the Pope’s directions adversely affected the Catholic Church. Cardinal Mazarin, on the other hand, kept Cardinal Richelieu's policies of centralization and collaboration with Protestant leaders, and this expanded the protestant churches. King Louis XIV completed Richelieu's work, the three leaders magnified the Catholic –Protestants divisions, and during their rule, Protestants gained traction in the seventeenth century France.
4 Compare and contrast Jansenism and Quietism with authentic Catholic spiritualism.
Jansenism does not believe in human free will of doing things, and instead, unlike the authentic Catholic spiritualism, it asserts that nature does not require human assent and that God's infusion of grace cannot be denied. Quietism, on the other hand, is a set of Christian beliefs which originated from France, where prayers would be conducted in silence, or ‘quiet.' Catholic spiritualism, on the other hand, incorporates vocal prayers as opposed to meditation.
5 Discuss the contributions of three saints in the period of Church history discussed in this chapter.
St Francis Xavier has a reputation of being able to convert the highest number of people to Christianity after Saint Paul. His passion for building the church was second to none and has lived throughout the history of the church as one of its pillars St Ignatius of Loyola founded the Jesuit Order in 1539. The third saint is St Peter Faber, a native of France. He was the first Jesuit priest and co-founder of the Society of Jesus.
