Psychology in Everyday Life Summary of the Article

Goals for this Paper:
1) For this paper, you are to find an article in popular media(e.g., newspaper, magazine, or internet-based media–NOT a scientific journal) that greatly interests you or “grabs” your attention.
2) Then, you will relate the article/the phenomenon of interest to any one concept, theory, or study described in the textbook and/or in lecture.
3) Next, you will then find one empirical article published in a peer-reviewed psychological journal to further examine the phenomenon of interest.
4) Finally, you will critically analyze the article you read in light of your additional research.
Specific Paper Content:
In the first paragraph of your paper, you will: Summarize IN YOUR OWN WORDS the article you read. A good summary will highlight the important points (who, what, when, where, and why).
In the next paragraph, you will: Relate the popular media article/the phenomenon of interest to any one concept, theory or study described in the textbook or in lecture. Be sure to accurately define the psychological concept, describe the theory, or state the main findings of the studyyou have chose and properly cite the material. Make sure the relevance (or link) between the phenomenon you are writing about and the psychological concept is clear and appropriate (i.e., demonstrates your mastery of the concept, theory, or study).
In the next 1-2 paragraphs, you will:Relate the popular media article/phenomenon of interest tooneempirical article.•Describe briefly the authors’ main research question or hypothesis, the participants studied, the methodology used (experiment, correlation, narratives, mixed-method, etc.)to conduct the study, and summarize the authors’ main finding(s).
In the final1-2 paragraphs, you will: Critically analyze your popular media article/phenomenon of interest in light of the reading modules/lecture-based concept, theory, or study to which you related the article andthe additional article you researched. For example, you may choose to discuss at least oneof the following: •Describe ways in which the popular media presentation of the phenomenon of interest was misleading, unclear, or could have been improved upon givenwhat you read in your reading modulesandadditional article. •Describe how information in the textbookandin your additional research article contradicted the popular media article or indicate that the media article may be based more on popular opinion or pseudoscience than evidence-based practices. •If you think the popular media article did a good job of reporting on this phenomenon, explain fully why you think so and support your argument with examplesfrom the reading modulesand additional article information you cited. •Explain how considering the popular media article in light of psychological concepts, research, and/or theory has given you new insights into this phenomenon.•Explain how the popular media article you read might illuminate a “gap” in the literature or justify the argument that the psychological concept, extant theory, or previous research should perhaps be revised or expanded upon to better understand this phenomenon.
