The two articles employ a number of techniques to ensure that the message is well received by the audience. The articles try to show the audience how tech companies are designed to capture their attention, thereby causing addition. In particular, they focus on how social apps and platforms try to continuously capture the attention of their users. Both articles are very informative, partly due to the techniques the authors have employed in delivering the message. While there are differences in the way the authors deliver the message, there are also some similarities. This paper compares and contrasts the effectiveness of the two articles.
First, both articles use a series of ethos to show the audience that the experts quoted are credible. The authors not only use experts to try to raise the credibility of the articles, but they also go ahead to describe their credentials. In Natasha Singa’s article, a number of experts including Greg Hochmuth, Sean Elis, Jonathan Harris, and Tristan Arris are quoted. The credentials of these experts are described with terms such as “software engineers”, “computer scientist”, and “design ethicist”. On the other hand, the article in Boldfish also uses the inputs of experts, whose credentials are well described. Some of the experts mentioned in the article include Alex Iskold, Mathew Crawford, and B.F. Skinner. They are described with terms such as “Harvard University psychologist”, “senior fellow”, and “Managing Director”. It is evident that the two articles try to convince the audience that the experts quoted are credible.
