Introduction
Traumatic injuries are widespread in sports activities and exercises. Some of these injuries result in lowered self-esteem or increased anxiety amongst the athletes. Unlike non-athletes, athletes are mostly emotionally affected by injuries. Traumatic injuries might require medical consultation, which requires the proficiency of a health professional. The sooner the treatment, the sooner the athlete can return to their sporting activities. Sometimes athletes with extreme trauma have had to return to the sports contests, but with the permission of an expert. Traumatic injuries deprive athletes of the therapeutic advantages they get from sports by causing specific functional abnormalities.
The injuries prevalent in sports, in most cases, leave a permanent negative impact on athletes who might never get back to the field even after recovery. Aside from physical healing, psychological recovery might cause much anxiety to the athletes. Different from those injuries that require surgery, some lead to increased stress and depression. Grant (2018) posits that athletes need the support of teammates, trainers, therapists, family, and friends as part of the recovery process. This social support plays a vital role in the athletes' healing process. This support will determine whether the athlete will return to the field or not or the amount of time to recover (Grant, 2018). Athletes' psychological skills also contribute to their healing process. The psychological trauma might be a single episode or a lasting event caused by a disagreement with the coach or teammates.
Brewer (2017) posits that efficient recovery depends on how the athlete uses his mental skills in keeping a positive attitude despite the traumatic experience. The first step of recovering is understanding the situation one is in and accepting the problem. One should not fear to express the way they feel about a concern because this might bar their recovery process. A positive attitude is an essential skill during psychological recovery (Brewer, 2017). Notably, the individual needs to set goals for when they plan on getting past the psychological trauma. Doing this helps one keep track of their progress and know what adjustments are required in the process. Brewer (2017) states that talking positively about the recovery and visualizing the healing is also an essential step in the recovery process. Adding to these, the support of friends, family, teammates, and trainers enhance recovery. Athletes need to learn how to relax when hurt by being calm and maintaining a positive attitude. This paper examines how psychological trauma affects athletes' recovery process, managing this problem, and the approach taken within sports management to help injured athletes.
