Climatology is a term used to refer to the scientific study of climate. Climatology refers to the quantitative description regarding climate. It usually identifies the various attribute values related to climate variables over a given region. This scientific study of climate considers the past as well as the potential changes concerning climate (Wilson, Drury & Chapman, 2000).
Studies involving climatology are capable of establishing whether we are in an ice age. From the findings based on climatology, the last ice age occurred when the atmospheric content of carbon dioxide gas went higher than 290 parts per million (ppm) (Chapman et al., 2000). This level of carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere higher than the principal green house gas and thus ice age came in to being. According to this study, ice ages reappear after very many years. Climatology data gathered from the ocean floor around Ecuador was able to avail the trend of carbon dioxide concentrations for the past 130000 years, a period presumed to be the last time when an ice age occurred (Barry & Chorley, 1998).
It is evident that data from climatology is capable of accurately determining whether we are in an ice age. The ice age occurs when the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere exceeds a certain limit according to climatology.
