The opioid pandemic has become rampant in American society, claiming a high number of lives each year. The issue has been attributed to misdiagnosis leading to wrong prescription and abuse of opioids by patients. The main contributor to the increasing rate is not yet established. Further, the local, state, and federal governments and other interest groups have invested efforts in curbing the pandemic and reducing its spread. However, there is no policy in place that outlines which government should address the issue and the primary measures that must be put in place. Sending a letter to a Congress member can help them with insight on how to approach the subject and push for the policy to be implemented.
Background on the Issue/Problem
The opioid epidemic is one of the issues that involve different aspects of the state government. The item has already escalated to a crisis level, just like social services, the criminal justice system, and behavioral health in the US (Volkow, Frieden, Hyde, & Cha, 2014). Individuals with issues in substance abuse and mental health issues use such disorders as addiction to opioids, and they are more common in prisons and jails than among the general population. 4.9% of women and 3.2% of men in society experience mental severe health cases like bipolar disorder, major depression, or schizophrenia. The rates in jails rise to as high as 31% among women and 14.5% among men (Gellad, Good, & Shulkin, 2017). Therefore, such statistics show that the epidemic of opioid use and abuse and its impacts on society are increasing.
Disorders related to the use of opioids are common in the case of incarcerated individuals. Currently, 50% of the federal and state prisoners have been established to meet the criteria for determining individuals with disorders related to substance use, as shown by the U.S Department of Justice (Nelson, Juurlink, & Perrone, 2015). Further, individuals with mental disorders are more susceptible than normal ones.
Those also incarnated often report cases of opioid disorders. Statistics also show that around 50% of federal and state prisoners meet the criteria that define substance use disorder, as per the Department of Justice (Theisen, Jacobs, Macleod, & Davies, 2018). Further, people with mental disorders have higher chances of having a substance or alcohol use disorder than those without the disease.
However, the criminal justice system of the United States has no obligation or measures aimed at treating drug addiction or mental illness (Hsu, McCarthy, Stevens, & Mukamal, 2017). In most cases, law enforcement officers arrest and then jail individuals who need medical instead of offering them such care. There are no measures for treating opioid addiction in prisons. Once an addict is released from jail, they relapse almost immediately, and they tend to overdose as they because intolerant when they were incarcerated.
Therefore, there is a need for a policy that requires opioid addicts and users to be taken to rehabilitation centers for medical assistance and therapy instead of prisons and jails. The new policy should ba...
