Final Long Essay Due: At the Final Exam In lieu of a long, cumulative essay during the final exam, each student will write a 3-4 page reflective essay that responds to the following: Drawing from the readings in this course (both primary and secondary), analyze how one defining feature of global history after the “Global Explosions” (1914-1945) was a product of the 19th century. Organize your essay just as you would any argumentative analysis with (1) introduction with debatable thesis; (2) evidence and analysis; (3) conclusion. The idea of this assignment is for you to demonstrate your synthesis of the course as a cohesive whole: to highlight or analyze the lasting connections of ideas, persons, institutions, or systems. You will do so by taking a “deep dive” about one feature of the 20th century and connect it to the 19th century. In short, the goal of this assignment is to assess your development of a historical consciousness--that is, an awareness of the historicity and interconnectedness of events. A successful essay would devise a thesis that treats one defining feature of the 20th century, contextualized by lectures or from the textbook, and that uses specific examples (or sources) as evidence to explain that feature’s 19th century connection. An unsuccessful, wholly inaccurate essay would simply repeat a single lecture or two from a student’s notes or describe chronological development (ex. like the sequence of events that prompted WWII). This essay will be due at the start of the final, in hard copy, and must be submitted on Turnitin.com through the Moodle portal. NOTE: since this assignment is a component of a final, it cannot be late. Late work will not be graded. Likewise, as a “take home” portion of the final, I will not review drafts. The purpose of this essay is to demonstrate your personal synthesis of historical knowledge, individual historical consciousness, and individualized meaning to the course material without my mediation. Students may, and are encouraged, to visit the writing center (virtually), however. Length: 3-4 pages, double-spaced Format: Size 12 font, Times New Roman, with 1 inch margins Citation Style: There’s no need to cite, but if you quote from a lecture or source, please use parenthetical citations (Sweis, #). Submission: Due by the Final Exam and uploaded on Turnitin.com through Moodle Portal. -Please Turn Over- Rubric: Grading Scale (out of 5 points): 4.5-5 points: The essay develops a specific thesis that connects one defining feature of the 20th century to the 19th century. Specific examples (from lectures, readings, or primary sources) are used to support the thesis claim. The essay’s organization is logical and clear. 3.5-4 points: The essay has a thesis but does not adequately connect one defining feature of the 20th century to the 19th century. The essay provides only a superficial analysis with minimal--perhaps even irrelevant--use of examples from lectures, readings, or otherwise.. 2.5-3 points: The essay lacks a claim but is purely descriptive. 2 points: Most of the assignment is underdeveloped (less than three pages). Little effort to demonstrate synthesis of the class themes and source material. 0-1 point: The assignment was wholly incomplete, late, or missing. Deductions: 0.25 - 0.5 points: for distracting syntax or grammatical errors. 0.25 - 0.5 points: for missing citations

1 Did the life for the “average” person change in fundamental ways between 1400 and 1800? If you took the average man or woman, say a farmer/ peasant, craftsperson, small-time merchant, or their wife and compare their lives in 1400 and in 1800 how much do you think their lives have changed? What aspects of life changed the most, and what changed the least? You can think in terms of their everyday lives, their work, their leisure, their homes, their education, occupational opportunities, and the like. How might they view things like religion, politics, or medicine? Was the average person’s life fundamentally the same, or different in important and essential ways?
Back in the 1420s, wet nursing was serious business that was often managed by the nurse’s husband, in the book of Piero di Viccio he accounted that in Florence infants were nursed in varying duration; some stays for a year, others for two, some were nursed for two months, others are just for two weeks. The payment differs in accordance to the baby’s gender, the class or status of the parents, and on how fresh the nurse’s milk is. The infant’s parents may provide furniture and clothing, and if an exclusive contract was demanded, the nurse’s very own child would be temporarily taken care of a cheaper wet nurse far from the city. In between these contracts, the nurse might take in infants who had been left out for the city’s foundling home or charitable hospitals.
In Piero’s writing, he noted some of his and his wife’s business records, and some of his experience with giving his daughter to a wet nurse; in 20th of October 1422, they nursed a child for a salary of 4 lire per month, this agreement lasted until the 9th of August 1424 totaling a 51 lire and 17 soldi; in 20th October 1424, he put a child to a nurse for two fiorini per month with an agreement of the wet nursing to last for two years with a total of 48 ...
