Assignment: Application: Adoption of New Technology Systems
As a nurse, you can have a great impact on the success or failure of the adoption of EHRs. It is important for nurses to understand their role as change agents and the ways they can influence others when addressing the challenges of changing to a drastically different way of doing things.
Everett Rogers, a pioneer in the field of the diffusion of innovations, identified five qualities that determine individual attitudes towards adopting new technology (2003). He theorized that individuals are concerned with:
1. Relative advantage: The individual adopting the new innovation must see how it will be an improvement over the old way of doing things.
2. Compatibility with existing values and practices: The adopter must understand how the new innovation aligns with current practices.
3. Simplicity: The adopter must believe he or she can easily master the new technology; the more difficult learning the new system appears, the greater the resistance that will occur.
4.Trialability: The adopter should have the opportunity to “play around' with the new technology and explore its capabilities.
5. Observable results: The adopter must have evidence that the proposed innovation has been successful in other situations.

For this Assignment, you assume the role of a nurse facilitator in a small hospital in upstate New York. You have been part of a team preparing for the implementation of a new electronic health records system. Decisions as to the program that will be used have been finalized, and you are now tasked with preparing the nurses for the new system. There has been an undercurrent of resistance expressed by nurses, and you must respond to their concerns. You have a meeting scheduled with the nurses 1 week prior to the training on the new EHR system. Consider how you can use the five qualities outlined by Rogers (2003) to assist in preparing the nurses for the upcoming implementation.

Adoption of EHRs is critical in a healthcare and nursing setting. However, a nurse can make an important contribution to ensuring success the EHRs adoption process. Therefore, it is equally important for every nurse to understand their significant role as a change agent. A successful adoption process can be achieved by carefully addressing the main areas that could be a source of resistance. The effectiveness of the EHRs adoption, like any other innovation, depends on the way it is perceived based on its trialability, complexity, observability and relative advantage (Adeyeye, 2015).
Rogers' Theory as a Foundation in Adopting EHRs
A nurse/EHRs facilitator should not be concerned about how the nurses' perceive inherent qualities of the idea or object, but rather on how they perceive the qualities. This is the relative advantage of the EHRs (Koopman, et al., 2015). The main objective here is ensuring the advantage nurses see supersedes that by producers. The facilitators must make sure that the level that EHRs is perceived as superior is high than that the existing idea. Nurses will most likely measure the relative advantage in convenience, economic, and satisfaction terms. With regards to satisfaction and social prestige, facilitators must make nurses believe that EHRs will give them what they want. Therefore, facilitators should convince nurses how EHRs is convenient compared to cheap traditional methods. Traditional methods provide less quality but that does not make them bi factor convenient.
EHRs also offer a degree of innovation that is consistent with current values, the past experiences, or the needs of any potential adopters. This is the compatibility quality for the EHRs. Up to this point, the determinant has been that of the end-user. The nurses need to be assured that the earlier system of content storage, production, and dissemination will be uncompromised by the EHRs by demonstrating to them that the producers are aware of the differences in the models (Barrett & Stephens, 2017). The dimensions facilitators need to handle regarding compatibility are the ways EHRs innovation fits beliefs and values, expressed needs and previous ideas.
An innovation that quickly gains reputation has to have ease of use, thus being classified on the simplicity continuum. An innovation that has a difficulty of use is categorized as complex. In the case of EHRs, the innovation can bring difficulties to the nurses as they try to modify the technology for own purposes because they lack technical knowledge.
