Mental health continues being a pertinent issue in the world today. There is so much that goes both ways when it comes to medical care of mentally ill patients ; since it captures all the various aspects of an individual’s wellbeing. This is to mean that it entails both physical, emotional as well as social wellbeing of a person. To this end therefore, any approach to the treatment of mental disorders must capture or address the three facets of a person’s wellbeing and existence. The coursework has been quite enlightening in the sense that it has helped capture not just the theoretical but also the practical aspects of psychiatry.
When it comes to psychotherapy theoretical concepts, the main focus is on how an individual feels and perceives reality. It is through understanding this that a professional is able to develop an approach that would address the problem from the patient’s point of view. Psychotherapy helps provide an avenue for recovery or management of mentally ill patients, through its various approaches. Some of the approaches in psychotherapy include cognitive, behavioral, humanistic and psychodynamic styles. The humanistic approach focuses on the inner desires of an individual and the realization that after all, the patient is just a human being with certain needed that aren’t provided (Stevens, 2021). It therefore works through creation of a positive or optimistic outlook into the future for the patient by the professional.
The cognitive aspect on the other hand, works to align the treatment approach to how the patient thinks. It is therefore about the patient’s thought process (Robertson, 2018). For the professional to come up with a treatment plan, the focus will be on how to relate with the patient base on the patient’s way of thinking, coming outside. The psychodynamic approach focuses on trying to unearth any past experiences that might contribute to the patient’s situation such as the situation experienced at the workplace or in childhood (Harari & Grant, 2022)....
