Professional Development Exercise Student: Professor: Course title: Date: Professional Development Exercise Section 1: Organizational Settings The top three organizational settings of a future health care management position are as follows: (1) community hospitals; (2) nursing homes; and (3) assisted living facilities. Community hospital is ranked first since I would like to serve in the communities and offer short-term treatment and therapy to community residents. I would also like to manage a nursing home that offers a cost-effective way to enable patients who have post-operative care needs, acute illnesses or injuries to recover within an environment outside a hospital. Assisted living facilities basically provide a housing alternative for senior citizens who might require assistance with toileting, eating, bathing, and dressing, but do not need the intensive nursing and medical care offered in nursing homes. Managing such a facility could be very interesting. Section 2: Leadership Selected leader’s effectiveness: in the healthcare facility, the leader exhibited several leadership competencies; that is, leadership behaviours and skills which contribute to superior performance (Mascia, Russo & Morandi, 2015). In leading others, this leader communicated effectively, developed other people, valued difference and diversity, built and maintained relationships, and was able to manage effective teams and work groups. She also had integrity and honesty. The leader assumed participative/consultative style of leadership and valued input of the team and only made her decision after consulting with staffs and team members. Selected leader’s ineffectiveness: another leader in the organization was somewhat ineffective since he apparently did not understand what it means to be a leader. In essence, leadership means responsibility since to be a leader implies the responsibility of service to other people (Buchbinder & Shanks, 2012). The leader was ineffective since he failed to always demonstrate ethics and values in his personal behaviour, he sometimes made decisions that are not transparent and he made them with bias or favouritism, failed to remove barriers to collaboration, and did not provide clear direction on priorities. Furthermore, this ineffective leader did not communicate effectively and did not motivate. This leader assumed autocratic leadership and always made decisions without consulting others, even if input of others would be helpful. Consequently, it resulted in demoralizing employees. Three personal leadership development goals: (i) Improve interpersonal skills: by having good people skills, my colleagues and staffs would feel comfortable to come to me with whichever problem they have, not afraid or intimidated of my reaction. (ii) Increase my knowledge: an effective leader does not stop learning and constantly wants to enhance her skill set. I would like to acquire a particular skill and improve my current abilities as this would allow me to become a more valuable, well-rounded leader. (iii) Inspire other people: to become a better manager/leader, I wish to encourage and inspire others to realize their individual goals as well as their potential. Section 3: Motivation What motivates me: there are a number of things that really motivate me. These include job security, autonomy on the job, working for an organization that I am proud of, having a challenging work, having harmonious relationships with colleagues and staff members, competitive salary, and clear career opportunities. Furthermore, I am motivated by generous benefit program and being recognized whenever I have done a job well. What demotivates me: I am demotivated by salary that is not competitive; when I am not recognized in the workplace; when the work is not challenging enough; when there lacks incentives; and when there is no auton...
