Causes of Depression
Depression is a mood disorder. It can manifest as major depressive disorder or clinical depression. Depression is presented with severe symptoms that affect how an individual feels and it affects how their think. Furthermore it affects their day to day activities like sleeping, working, eating or even relations with others. Depression appears in various forms and develops under unique circumstances. Depression can be mild that is it doesn't affect the normal operations of an individual. On the other hand, depression can be severe to a point it becomes suicidal.
It is experienced in various forms and includes persistent depressive disorder where an individual experiences episodes of major depression and periods of less severe depression. Another type of depression is postnatal depression which affects women after giving birth but clears after a few weeks. Psychotic depression occurs as a result of psychosis and is manifested by delusions, while Seasonal affective disorder is a form of depression which is associated with winter when there is less sunlight.
Depression occurs in both Children and adults in many ways. One school of thought describe the cause of depression as old age and that as human age, they become more and more susceptible to depression. Conversely, the other school of thought argues that individual's development from childhood to adolescent to adulthood influences their rate of depression. Cognitive theories of depression contribute a great deal in showing the causes of depression. This paper focuses on genetic factors, temperament and parent and peers factors in an attempt to explain causes of depression.
Causes of depression
Behavioral theorists believe that old age causes depression and that as one ages his or her chances of being depressed increases (Fiske et al., 2009). The assumption compares the rate of depression in older individuals against their younger counterparts. However, cognitive behaviorists argue that individual's development process from childhood to adulthood predisposes them to depression. This paper uses the cognitive theory to explain causes of depression. The genetic makeup of individuals has been associated with cognitive vulnerabilities to depression (Hayden et al., 2008). It argues that cognitive vulnerabilities act as immediate risk factors connecting genetic makeup of an individual to depression. That genetic makeup of individuals contributes to their heritability and mood swings. The article argues that rumination is closely associated with genotypes that cause depression in adolescent girls.
The cognitive theory also attributes depression to temperament. It claims that individual temperamental traits which are inheritable cause depression in childhood and in adolescence (Hankin, et al., 2011). Temperament also plays a role in the development of depression by accelerating the risk for formation of cognitive vulnerabilities or through other hazards process (Hankin & Abramson, 2001). Temperament causes depression through three main ways, positive emotionality, negative emotionality and attention control.
Negative emotionality is associated with uncomfortable and tensed experience like fear, anger and quick reaction to stress. Pleasure and environmental rewards are related to positive emotionality. The ability to control emotions, behaviors and focus is related to attention control. In a situation where an individual possesses lower positive emotionality, less attention control, and higher negative emotionality, depression becomes inevitable more so among the youths (Wetter & Hankin, 2009).
