Health care issue at the national or state level
The health care issue is lowering prescription drug prices as there have been concerns about prescription drug affordability in the US. Healthcare costs in the US are among the highest in the world and high drug costs are one of the reasons for this. The pharmaceutical industry is and some legislators have opposed this proposal for the likely negative effect on the industry.
Some measures have been proposed in the past to address this. Among this is allowing cheaper generic drugs with the same effect as brand drugs, allowing the federal Medicare system to negotiate with drug companies, and even allowing consumers/patients to import low-priced drugs from Canada.
Representative’s position
Abigail Spanberger (D-VA 7th District) has supported measures to lower prescription drugs in Virginia and at the national level. While some of Spanberger’s proposals have been adopted in Virginia, there is still a need to get broad bipartisan support.
