Blood is one of the major body components. In humans and animals, it is responsible for transferring gases and nutrients from one part of the body to the other and can transport metabolic waste products away from the cells. Peripheral blood consists of plasma, which constitutes over 50 percent of blood fluid, and three types of cellular components, erythrocytes (red blood cells), thrombocytes (platelets) and leukocytes (white blood cells). As the name indicates, the red blood cells (erythrocytes) have an approximate diameter of 6.5 µm, and their thickness is up to 2.7 µm (Devine & Howe, 2010, p. 80). They are round in shape and are responsible for transporting oxygen from one part of the body to the other. In an adult human, 20 to 40 trillion red blood cells exist at any given time, making up 65 percent of all cells by number. Every red blood cell contains nearly 300 million hemoglobin molecules (Devine & Howe, 2010).
