MAE 444/544, Spring 2020 Graduate Project Due Monday, May 18 by 11:59 PM, on UBLearns There are two main avenues to take: Theoretical, or Experimental. Listed below are possible options for a project in each of these categories 1. Theoretical (a) Paper Review: Find a journal article related to digital control systems, or an article from an academic conference related to digital control systems. Write a detailed summary of the work, and work through any key derivations. Be critical of the work, and try to identify strengths and weaknesses of their research. Here, your goal is to demonstrate your understanding of the work, and that you have wrestled with the content. Purely regurgitating derivations will earn you a poor score. Finally, if possible, you should replicate key numerical results in their paper. For example, many controls papers show a numerical simulation of their proposed controller; if the paper is thorough, they give you the tools to replicate their results as part of the peer-review process. (b) Advanced Topic Review (from a textbook): This is similar to the Paper Review, but it focuses on some advanced topic related to digital controls, from a textbook. For example, you might be interested in the topic of adaptive control, or optimal control, or nonlinear control, or system identification. Find a textbook on one of these topics, and dig into one of the chapters in the textbook. Write a detailed summary of the content, and work through key derivations. Once again, show that you have engaged with the content, and worked hard for your understanding. Replicate the results of key examples. (c) Literature Review: This is similar to the Paper Review or Advanced Topic Review, but it focuses on compiling at least a dozen academic sources (rather than one journal article, or one textbook chapter) and writing a review that summarizes the body of academic work. You can use this project to branch out a little bit. For example, you could complete a literature review on the applications of digital control systems to the treatment of diabetes; or the application of control systems theory to understanding global climate trends; or the application of digital controls to two-wheeled balancing robots. Let your interests guide the topic of the literature review. Once again, you are looking to accumulate at least a dozen sources on the topic (not two or three). Breadth is a key aim of this project. (d) Simulation Project: Apply your knowledge of digital controls to develop a controller for some complex system, and simulate your results. Your focus should be to make the simulation as realistic as possible. As an example, you could investigate the problem of lane positioning for an autonomous car; or you could look at damping out the roll motions of a large ship using a gyroscope. The place to start with a project like this is looking for papers or textbooks that have investigated similar problems. Then, you need to find a mathematical model for the system you want to control; either by deriving it yourself, or finding a reliable source. Experimental (a) Hands-On project. This approach to the final project focuses on applying digital controls knowledge to a hands-on project. As a warning, it is not often straightforward to implement something on hardware, therefore the project will be less theoretically intense, and more focused on applying basic digital controls principles to some application! I would only suggest pursuing a project like this if you have some prior experience with programming a microcontroller (like an Arduino). Final Project Deliverables: Whether you pursue a theoretical project or a hands-on project, you must submit: 1. A proposal.
