Abstract
Israel and Palestine have been embroiled in a bitter tussle for Middle East since the Sates of Israel was formed on the ancestral land of Palestine. To worsen the situation, Israel culture is greatly differs from that in Middle East. Israel is a majority Jew Nation while the rest of Middle East is Muslim pitting into account the protracted acrimony, animosity and differences that have pitted the two since the antiquity ages. The essay explores the negotiation skills, comparing it to M&A business negotiation skills, that Israel has used to settle differences with a couple of its neighbors such as Egypt and Jordan. However, it also explores the major shortcoming of negotiations that have led to continues stalemate and animosity with Palestine.
Exploring Negotiations
The following essay will explore the techniques and mechanism of effective negotiation skills with regards to the situation in the Middle East that pits Israel against Palestine. Despite the intermittent eruption of violence between the two culturally divergent countries, they have generally succeeded in mitigating a full scale war. However, even more ideal negotiation skills need to be adopted to ensure protracted peace in the region. The Israel-Palestine conflicts has protracted since the 1970s that has disseminated into an Arab- Israel conflicted. Negotiations have been drawn out with some portions bearing to fruition considering that Israel had signed peace deals with a number of Arab countries such as Egypt and Jordan.
The United States has been the main facilitator in the negotiations; however, the country has been accused of bias in favor of Israel. The basis for the peace process tends to differ between the two States, which is a major undoing in the peace negotiation (Slater, 2001). Drawing on historical point of view, it is clear that Palestine is keen on seeking justice for their apparent denial of their ancestral land in 1948 the year in which Israel was created and sits on. Israel, on the other hand, bases its peace diplomacy based on its occupation of some of Palestinian territories in 1967. While Israel historically sits on Palestinian ancestral land, Israelites have no other patrimonial land to transfer to and thus, cannot be wished away or exterminated.
Therefore, the ‘maximalist’ actions of Hamas to obdurately fight to reoccupy Israel only invokes defense from Israel in which they have a right to. Thus, the notion to war has been steadily moderated as the option of dialogue is espoused. The initial progress to the deliberations was displayed by the signing of the Oslo Accord. Stipulations of the accord were that Palestine State appreciates the right of Israel to be existent and in reciprocal attitude; Israel withdrew its troops from the West Bank and Gaza Strip regions. However, over the negotiation both sides have traded blame on reneging on the peace treaty and have simmered attitudes of mistrust.
