Identifying Statistics Terms Research Assignment Paper

Statistics Project Instructions:

Use the template to document your knowledge about basic statistical tests that counselors often encounter. This template will prove useful when you take the final quiz in this course, as you move forward in your master’s program, and when you study for your licensing exam.  Download a copy of the template to your computer, and complete the columns throughout the course, beginning with Unit 4. This assignment is due in Unit 10. Much of the chart can be completed by studying the suggested resources that are listed in the chart. However, you may need to locate additional resources for some entries. The more complete and correct you make your entries, the more useful the chart will be to you. Be sure to document your sources so that you can revisit them in the future, if necessary. If you choose, you may add rows to include additional entries.

Description
(use of the statistic)

Level of Measurement
(Sheperis, et al., 2010, p. 216-218)

Example of Application:
(Summarize or give an example of how you might see this term in a study)

Mean
(p. 226)

Refers to the average results of an experiment, a test, a survey or the average of the numbers or a calculated central value of a set of numbers. In other words, the mean is a typical determinant of central tendency since it can be mathematically manipulated easily.

Interval Scale: Since it allows to measure central tendency of interval variables.

Example:
Weights of 10 people: 5 Kg, 6 kg, 5 Kg 7Kg, 5kg. 10 Kg, 5 Kg, 8 Kg, 5 Kg and 8 Kg
The sum is: 64kg
Divide 64 Kg by 10 = 6.4
The mean (average) is 6.4Kgs

Median
(p. 227)

Median refers to the score that splits or divide the values in half. In other words, it the middle value that separates the higher half of a data population, data sample, or a probability distribution from the lower half.

Ordinal Scale: Since it is a middle ranked item which allows the measure of central tendency.

Odd amount of numbers: Find the median of 5 inches 7 inches, 11 inches, 8 inches, 9Inches, 7.5 inches, 8 inches, 5 inches and 6 inches
Line up the numbers from smallest to largest:
5 inches, 5 inches, 6 inches, 7 inches, 7.5 inches, 8 inches, 8 inches, 9 inches , 11 inches
The median is: 7.5 inches (the number in the middle).

Mode
(p. 228)

Mode refers to the most frequent or the most common result in set of data. In is use, the mode factors in the sense of nominal data, that is, it can be employed in a non-numerical data.

Ordinal Scale.
Mode is allowed since the ordinal scale allows sorting and ranking of data in the measure of central tendency.

Example:
Find the mode of 4 inches, 6 inches, and 5 inches 7 inches, 5 inches, 10 inches, and 5inches 8 inches, 5 inches and 8 inches.
Put the numbers is order to make it easier to visualize: 4 inches, 5 inches, 5 inches, 5 inches, 5 inches, 7 inches and 8 inches and 10 inches
The mode is 5 inches (it occurs the most, at 4 times).

Range
(p. 229)

Range refers to the difference between the largest value and the smallest value in set of data.

Interval Scale: Since it allows to measure central tendency of interval variables.

Example
Example: In {3, 7, 2, 5, 6 8, 5} the lowest value is 2, and the highest is 8.
So the range is 8-2 = 6.

Standard Deviation
(p. 229)

Standard deviation refers to the is a measure that is used to determine and quantify the amount of dispersion of variation of a set of data values

Interval Scale: Since it allows to measure central tendency of interval variables.

There are 150 nursing students in a university. Statistically, this implies that there is a population sample of 150 students. Given the number of nursing textbooks each of the 150 students pirates have, the standard deviation is used for the entire population.

Correlations
(p. 62-64)

Correlations refers t...
