Doom Loop is when you launch new programs in hopes to motivate the troops, but it fails to produce sustained results. Push the flywheel in one direction, stop and change course, then throw it in a new direction. Fail to build sustained momentum.
Stages in Doom Loop
Every doom loop has some peculiar beginnings and trajectory. First, it is the new direction/program/leader/acquisition which is touted to be the ‘next big thing.’ This can come in form of restructuring the business, restructuring the business model, a new leader, an acquisition etc. The new thing is touted as the solution to the problems facing the organization. For example, A&P, went into doom loop that saw the company lose its market share to Kroger and barely survive the market shift of the 70s of consumers wanting different store layout. Collins describes A&P strategy, ‘A&P then began a pattern of lurching from one strategy to another, always looking for a single-stroke solution to its problems. It held pep rallies, launched programs, grabbed fads, fired CEOs, hired CEOs, and fired them yet again. It launched what one industry observer called a "scorched earth policy." The lack of commitment to a single, well informed and gradual strategy is the first iteration of doom loop.
Secondly, the step taken in step one does not last. It is never allowed to gain momentum and yield results. Every good strategy is structured to yield results in the long run.
