● Context: In this unit, you have examined and analysed representations of power in
a variety of media texts, as well as strategies for developing a persuasive
argument. You have discussed how these texts position and influence audiences
and the impact of their representations.
Task
Construct, script and deliver (live or pre-recorded) a persuasive TEDx Talk on the issue
of power to an Australian audience. You need to select a contentious aspect of power
that has appeared in media texts in the last year. These aspects may relate to the
broad topics of politics, gender and sexuality, race and culture, class, mental illness, the
power of a name and the power of truth. Construct a persuasive argument of your own
that adds to the public conversation about the issue.
Your TEDx Talk will invite audiences to reconsider their own position on the issue,
persuade them to accept your stance, and influence them to take action using the
patterns and conventions of a persuasive spoken text.
You may support your response with multimodal elements, such as digital, appropriate
to the audience and context.
To complete this task, you must:
● generate your argument from critical engagement with media texts about the issue
● establish a thesis in relation to the issue of power
● develop your argument to persuade others on this issue, making use of the ways
cultural assumptions, attitudes, values and beliefs underpin perspectives and
representations on the issue
● select and synthesise subject matter to support your argument
● manipulate a variety of rhetorical and persuasive strategies to position and
convince your audience to accept your thesis.
Scaffolding
● Your persuasive speech should reflect an understanding of the relationship
between language, argument and speaker presence. Your script and delivery
should demonstrate clear awareness of the audience, purpose and context of the
speech.
● It should include the following:
– a clear thesis on the issue
– a series of points to support the contention, employing logical reasoning
– engagement with an ongoing public conversation about the issue of power
– reference to (or critique of) other perspectives proposed in media texts (if
appropriate to the development of your argument)
– incorporation of a range of rhetorical strategies to influence your audience, for
example, emotive language and appeals, figurative language, rhetorical
questions, repetition, anaphora, antistrophe, antithesis, identifying with the
audience, statistics, evidence, case studies
– a call to action appropriate to the audience and context.

● TEDx Talks are multimodal. You can use slides to add visuals, but remember the

information

Women Feel Pressured By Some Men To Change The Way They Look Or Act In Order To Progress Their Careers
“The organizers of TEDx Talk and all protocol observed. How are you? Women have been treated like they are lesser human beings for a long time. They do not have better chances for positions in politics, leadership, among others. Here in Australia, women have had serious issues at the workplace to be specific from time immemorial. Some of them have given up on their careers because of these problems.
Women have been discriminated at workplaces. They are given too many tests during recruitment at work, something that their male counterparts are not asked for. They are told to provide additional evidence that they can do the job. This brings in pressure where women have to sweat more than men to get the same job. Some decide to even give in to the pressure and leave the jobs. Women are also discriminated against when it comes to political nominations. Most people assume that politics is for tough people; men only. This is wrong because many women have actually proved that what a man can do, a woman can also do it. This is a common phenomenon here in Australia and if women do not gain the courage to defend their rights then the future of women at work is doomed (King et al 2019).
In some offices, women are overworked to cook and feed their male workmates. You see naturally women are expected to cook for males and even do general family cleanliness. This is mistreatment. It is never fair to use a woman to serve males at workplaces the same way they feed their husbands. Women should have the freedom and privilege to do as males do. Trying to cope up gives them too much pressure because they need the job and ironically, they have to persevere to keep it. Men take advantage of this to undermine females at work. (Bertone & Abeynayake, 2019)
