Forte-Piano Vs. Modern Piano
Forte-Piano was used between 1700 to early 19th Century. They are famous for the work of Haydn, Mozart, and the younger Beethoven. The Beethoven’s era experienced steady evolution that paved a way to the modern piano in the 19th Century. This led to Fortepiano becoming obsolete. However, it was later revived in the 20th Century due to an interest in historical performances. Today, the fortepianos are built in workshops for these historic performances (Skowroneck 151). This paper compares the fortepiano and the modern piano, giving the difference of how they are played, their merits and demerits.
Both pianos produce a varied pitch depending on the pianist’s key. However, the fortepiano is always soft (Taruskin 168). Their performance is more soothing compared to the modern piano that has a hard tone. The two videos I selected are playing the same melodies, but the one played on fortepiano has a softer tone. Notably, the tone of the fortepiano is very different from the modern one (Claves Records Official). The dynamics accent stands out more in the fortepiano than modern because they differ from more soothing notes in timbre, volume, and decay rapidly.
The tone quality in fortepianos is different in various registers. In the video sample, the bass is slightly buzzing and a bit tinkling in the treble tone (EuroArtsChannel). On the other hand, the modern piano is round and more uniform in the tonal range compared to the fortepiano. The naturals sound longer and slightly wider in the fortepiano while the sharps are somewhat narrower compared to the modern piano.
