Topic Presentation
The aim of this speech is to talk to you about African Archaeology. In specific, I am going to narrow down to a large scale investigation and excavation scheme that was carried out along the coast of Congo.
Before I start, Irequest all of you to lend meyour ears as I explain in detail the archaeological project that took place on the Loango coast.
The project was started in the year 1987 as an academic task that was aimed at investigating an archaeological happening that was discovered by geologists who were working for Conoco, an oil company in Congo the oil company intended to use the investigation to improve their position in the competitive oil market. The initial excavations to be used as tests were completed earlier than expected. This gave the researchers time to explore before returning to their home country. They went to visit Tchissanga, on the opposite bank of the Kouilou River. It seems like the trip was favoring them since they discovered more ceramics. Later on, they found out that there were relic items and ended up naming the site, Madingo-Kayes, after a village. After a test excavation was carried out, the researchers found out that there were samples of charcoal.
Archaeologists from Congo were active participants in the project since it started. The researchers discovered that the samples they collected at Tchissanga dated earliest in the Ceramic Later Stone Age among the materials that had been sampled around the coastal Atlantic region. There were a lot of investors willing to put money into the expansion of the project. As expected, the project would serve the interests of Conoco better than everyone else.
As good as the project sounds, the researchers faced some problems during their time in Congo. For one, the natives of Congo did not participate. The roads were poorly developed making it hard to travel to the site. As a result, the overall project was affected.
