Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about the effects of tobacco and nicotine on our bodies and the environment. Central Idea: Tobacco and Nicotine have a harmful effect on our bodies and the environment.  
  1. Introduction
    1. Tobacco is one of the most consumed commodities around the world.
      1. WHO reports that there are 1.3 billion tobacco users in the world in 2021 (WHO.Int).
    2. In the United States alone, reports show that nearly 13%, that’s 13 Americans out of 100, are current smokers (CDC.Gov). That’s an average of 30+ daily smokers in the United States alone.
      1. That does not yet include other sources of nicotine and tobacco substances like e-cigarettes and vapes to name a few.
    3. How many here among us are tobacco smokers? Nicotine users?
      1. Does that all mean harm and danger?
              Transition: Let us start by looking at the effects of nicotine and tobacco on our bodies and the environment.  
  1. It is true that nicotine has a lot of harmful effects on our bodies. However, contrary to popular belief, nicotine has benefits for our bodies too.
    1. Studies show that nicotine has benefits in improving both our memory, and concentration, and even reduces our anxiety (Felman).
      1.  When we consume nicotine, we experience heightened memory, concentration, and memory because of chemicals like norepinephrine and acetylcholine (Felman).
a)      These are the same chemicals that are activated in our bodies during periods when we feel motivated or even aroused (Espana et al.). b)      Now, remember how easier it was to study, memorize, and even understand complex information when you are feeling highly motivated.

      1. Nicotine can also reduce our anxiety or anxiousness because of the release of chemicals like beta-endorphins.
a)      Bea-endorphins are chemicals that are primarily responsible for blocking our sensation of pain (National Cancer Institute). b)      This is perhaps the reason why individuals who are feeling afraid or nervous tend to use cigarettes as a coping mechanism.               Transition: Now that we have learned about the benefits of nicotine in our bodies, let us discuss the harmful effects of nicotine and tobacco on both our bodies and the environment.    
  1. Nicotine taken from tobacco smoking can cause a variety of illnesses in our bodies.
    1. Some of the primary illnesses that can be caused by tobacco smoking are; (1) lung diseases, (2) stroke, (3) heart disease, (4) cancer, (5) emphysema, and (6) chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), to na...
