Food Allergy
During this speech, I will talk about food allergy. I will also talk about what allergy is, its causes, symptoms, treatment and who are affected most with these allergic reactions. I have already done lots of research concerning food allergy since I am allergic to cucumber. I hope you will all listen so that you can all benefit. It is necessary to have knowledge about food allergy since you can be of help to your society when such problems arise.
How many people in this congregation are allergic to some foods? Which are these foods that cause allergic reactions to our bodies? Did you people know that 25% believe that they have allergies but only 2.5% of adults and 6% of the children under age of six experience true allergic reactions to food? The other percentage only experience food intolerance and not allergy. Many people confuse food allergy with food tolerance since they share some symptoms such as stomach upsets. It is; therefore, importance for all of you to beware of whether certain food is either allergic, or intolerance (Dean 80).
What is food allergy? According to the medical encyclopedia, food allergy is an abnormal response by the body’s immune system to milk, eggs, meat and other foods. In normal circumstances, the immune system protects the body from harmful substances, for instance, viruses, bacteria, and toxins. However, in some people, the immune system responds to certain food though they are not harmful to the body. This reaction is known as allergy.
I know many of you are asking themselves what causes allergic reactions caused by food. These allergic reactions are caused by allergy producing substances known as immunoglobulin antibodies that respond abnormally to certain foods, which are supposed to be harmless. Any food is capable of producing an allergic reaction. The main common foods that cause allergic reactions to children are milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, red meat and shellfish.
Adults are mostly allergic to vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, celery and parsnip, and fruits such as apples, pears, kiwi fruit and peaches. Other common allergic food to adults is Crustaceans or shellfish, such as crab, lobster and prawns, Tree nuts, such as walnuts, Brazil nuts, almonds and pistachios, Peanuts and Fish. However, nut allergies are more common to both adults and children. Many Allergic reactions are mild, but can also be serious and lead to death.
Other cause of food allergy is the child’s background about suffering eczema, a condition of skin allergy during infancy. If the eczema started early and is worse, the child is likely to have an allergy in certain foods. Other people develop food allergy due to other allergic conditions e.g., fever and asthma. These are conditions whereby one is allergic to small particles such as pollen grains and smells (Dumke 6).
