Expectations for Class Presentations online
Due Thursday by 11:59pm
Learning to communicate effectively to colleagues is a key skill to master for any future career. We are especially lucky within Art History and Visual Culture program as we are able to train in both written and visual literacy and communications. Tips and Expectations for Presentations:
Choose an artist/artist collective/art activist project about decolonization and record to post on PeppeR for the class to review and comment. Prepare the presentation via Powerpoint or Googleslides as a short lecture presentation.
Fewer images is usually better.  Ideal number is usually 5-8 images (maximum # of images would be 10-15). Limit your presentation to a recorded 15 minute time frame.
To produce your Powerpoint or Googleslides presentation to post on PeppeR, you will need to clearly record a voiceover to your visual presentation. Don't worry, it doesn't have to be "perfect"--you will see when you re-listen to my lectures there will be some "human" ahs, ums in there, but try to minimize them by having your notes clear and ready to go to read with images
Make 1 or 2 points with each image. When you are introducing the work of an under-seen or represented artist, artist-activist group, please give some biographical and professional details about the artist at the beginning but keep it brief. It is the work we want to know about.
Please note also that, particularly in relation to the subject matter of our course, arts institutions and curators often rely solely on biography to select artists--you may want to consider what the implications of these choices are?• Choose exciting images and explain to your audience why these images drew you in and how the works relate to some of the larger questions of the course
Think about how to catalyze conversation amongst your peers in the class: what are the salient questions that the works address? What is the potential of this work in these considerations of decolonizing?
The choice of artist and artworks will also put your skills of "formal analysis" to use. Rather than simply "describing" what we all see in the images, consider how the medium, method of making or presentation, colour or consideration of the work's audiences and engagement with those audiences contribute to our understanding and its effectiveness.
Remember to enjoy this process. It is designed to build upon the kind of reflections you have been doing weekly, and to prepare you for the final short project of either a 5-8 page research paper or an online exhibition proposal and project.

Decolonization Through Black Lives Matter Movement (BLM)
Artists have always placed an important role in highlighting the various struggles within the society, and even helping to agitate for a change in the same. Through their artistic representations, a lot can be learnt and even thoughts of change provoked. At a time where there is quite some social unrest within the American populace in matters about race, art has taken centre stage in highlighting various aspects. This paper shall present several paints by different artists in their push for ensuring equality especially between black and white people in the world today. In addition, the paper shall also highlight why the arts stand out and some of the implications and debates they trigger among difference audiences.
Art work by Banksy
Banksy, being a political activist presents relevancy in the BLM movement and by that his arts including the one above draws attention especially in matters involving civil rights. In his art above, the flag, the portrait and the white glowing candle presents conveys his mind with the flag representing the united America, the candle represents white people, who the author portrays as the problem while the portrait represent death of black people. Even before one can read the text he posts alongside this art in his social media account, the message is already communicated to them through the art. Anonymity of the author also makes the art interesting as individuals’ perception about his race does not influence their interpretation. The question arising from the painting however, is whether the piece is decolonizing anything as it does not represent any change. Instead, it presents the colonization aspect of what is happening in USA and how it is affecting the nation.
It Stops with Cops by Michael D’Antuono
Micael D’Antuono, is a renowned paint artist with several pieces of art in his name. Some of his arts such as the talk and the truth have raised several debates in the United States. D’Antuono’s controversial figure as an artist in the niche of black liberation is what has made him a significant person in this topic. D’Antuono’s race is also another important figure as it squashes the conventional notion among the public that blacks are the sole proponents of the BLM movement. The piece of art also squashes the idea in the public domain that white cops encourages brutalization of black people. Instead, the art does not only advocates for end of police brutalities against black people, but also highlights the importance of white cops in the fight. For instance, in the piece, a white is trying to stop his white colleague from beating up unarmed black person. This is unique in the sense that it contradicts the conventional way of thinking by many people that all white cops are racist. Finally, as much as the art forms part of activism on BLM movement, its properties debunks the same. This is because its primary message is that brutalization stops with the cops themselves and not by holding protests such as Black Live Matter movement.
A Surge of Power by Marc Quinn
Marc Quinn is also another unique white artist whose works seeks to advocate for equality...
