In the early 13th century, a new leader united the tribes of the Mongol people. Temujin Khan who came later to be known as the Genghis Khan united the tribes and built an empire which at his time of death was four times larger than that of the Alexander the Great. The Mongol empire at some point in history stretched from Poland through Eastern Europe, through the whole Middle East to the Far East to China and Korea and further south to Vietnam. From humble beginnings, Genghis Khan who was a son of a tribal chief, came to lead the largest contiguous empire in history. It has not been rivalled to date, and the after-effects of his conquest are still present today. So how did Genghis Khan come to build such a vast empire? How did he unite a nomadic nation to be a formidable force in war? How did he change the course of history and eventually come to rule nearly the whole of Asia?
First, the Mongol empire rallied behind a barbaric leader, and therefore their warfare was characterized by the total annihilation of their enemies. Their leader, Genghis Khan, believed it was his destiny to rule the world. He perceived his purpose was to rule the world for his god, TengriCITATION Geo09 \p 29 \l 1033 (Lane, 2009, p. 29). This is the reason he attacked with ferocity and speed because he believed he was a tool to fulfil the destiny he had of the gods. There are many stories and myths about his barbarism in war. He killed as many people whenever he attacked a country or a city. His methods of killing were cruel and after looting, he would burn the city to the ground. That way, his enemies or other commanders and rulers wishing to fight him would be deterred by the stories they heard of his annihilation. He would not leave anything for his victims and as stories of his cruelty to his enemies spread, most small kingdoms and nations did not dare confront him in war. And for those he faced in battle, he was ruthless in destroying them. Additionally, as he conquered more people, his army grew stronger as he would have supplies and weapons to continue his conquest. Thus, eventually, the Mongolian people helped their leader to fulfil his ‘destiny’ to rule the world.
Secondly, the Mongolian empire under the stewardship of Genghis Khan changed their army structure from that of aristocratism to merit-based-promotionCITATION Geg86 \p 23 \l 1033 (Pittard, 1986, p. 23). He quashed the idea of appointing relatives to lead the army and instituted a new system of choosing the best soldiers based on merit. He also employed psychological tricks to make his army formidable. Hence, the army became effective and was able to win more wars with fewer casualties. They had a strategy of charging and then withdrawing which lured their enemies into a trap. They would then turn back on them and decimate them. His military mighty came because of the unorthodox leadership style and commandeering of his army. Previously, army ranks were given to specific people because of their family position i.e. first-borns. However, Genghis Khan scrapped that system and instituted a new system that the people who showed loyalty and were effective in the war were rewarded with...
