Musculoskeletal disorders
Musculoskeletal disorders include those conditions and diseases for example arthritis, osteoporosis and low back pain, which involve the major muscle groups and the skeletal system. Musculoskeletal disorders are the main sources of chronic pains and form the most common complaints especially among the elderly. Mackinnon (2003, P.223) notes that osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and among the leading cause of Disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Low back pains on the other hand affect an average of 80% of the population and osteoporosis which leads to loss of bone integrity increases with an increase in lifespan (Mackinnon, 2003, P.224). Exercises and regular physical activities are very vital for both primary and secondary treatments of musculoskeletal disorders. Any physical inactivity which usually results from a reaction to pain leads to physical impairment and the loss of physical function.
