Ladies and gentlemen,
As already established, child malnutrition is a challenge in India. As stated earlier, many strategies have been employed to address this issue. However, let’s look critically at some of the strategies available to practitioners of the profession.
In as much as India is blessed with an abundance of nutrition specialists, it continues to suffer from uncoordinated efforts due to the lack of a comprehensive nutrition strategy that would address the nutrition problem effectively. Let me however point out that, there exist success stories on states that have managed to address directly the needs of the poor. This goal is universally accepted as critical to the achievement of eradication of child malnutrition. For example, the improvement of child survival as a result of cash transfer – as an intervention program that is sensitive to child social protection mechanism, has surprisingly baffled many (Save the Children, 2009).
Many vies abound on the way India could progress rapidly towards eradicating child malnutrition. I strongly believe that a lot of what will work will be homegrown. That it is the small things that will ensure success. This will include, ensuring real economic expansion and poverty reduction guidelines reach the poor; using the current knowhow – science and technology, to devise nutrition and health action plans that in reality better nutrition; having pro poor interventions targeting nutritional services and backing this with finances and action, and finally giving additional attention to girls and women’s health and nutrition programs.
In conclusion, India has to realize that reduction of child malnutrition is critical to the achievement of MDG’s in addition to been directly correlated to infant child mortality.
