Historical Context
"The Blue Kite" by Tian Zhuang Zhuang in 1993 reveals the political impacts of different political movements into the fifth generation. The film provides a perspective story of a young boy who observes the Anti-Rightist Movement and Cultural Revolution as well as their impacts on the people who lived in the 1950s and 1960s. The protagonist Tietou sees how his family member evolves especially his real father and a patriarch to the stepfather who was protective but not emotional. The historical consequences to the fifth generation in the film have nothing to share on human nature rather it gives much of the Cultural Revolution and its impacts on the nation. The grownups show their sharp reliefs in reconstructing the past historical events that touch both their culture and political environment. Besides, the film gives the various ways how the generation comes to terms with their traumatic memories. The nation was under the unrestrained capitalism amidst uprising for changes. The Story in “The Blue Kite”
“The Blue Kite” begins with a wedding between Lin Shaolong and Chen Shujuan after the Communist victory of the 1950s. The neighborhood is happy that would later contrast the events of the coming years. The couples later get happy at the birth of Tietou or "iron head." His father later creates him a blue kite that represents better days ahead and loved the boy. He said, “I will make you another one…” The father said the quote when the kite stuck on the tree. Due to the political and aftermath of the revolution, Shaolong goes for a meeting of the Rectification Movement. He goes to the toilet during the meeting, and upon his return, everybody turns against him. Tietou later learns that his father was sent away to a labor camp and then died in an accident. As a result, the Tietou and his mother go through the hard life of Cultural Revolution with poverty, no protection, famine and two more marriages that end in death and divorce. The mother and her young boy walk through hard life to live an ordinary life. Tietou experiences a change in culture until his adolescence age. The family gets frustrations from the Red Guard. The Guards drugs Shujuan on the ground and beats Tietou and leaving him on the ground while the mother is taken to the work camp.
The Climax Scene
The most interesting scene is that which shows the historical and dramatic features at the climax. The scene begins with soldiers who surround Tietou's father. The close show up of the camera reveals glasses were falling on the ground then a symbol of new China Army. Voices of soldiers shouting the name of Tietou's father are all over. The voices demand him to wake up. A closer camera show Tietou’s father who passes out then a zooming reveals the soldiers and children surrounding the father.
